In this text, which was written somewhere between 400 BCE and 200 CE, there are descriptions of fighters using bare hands and feet to punch, kick, and wrestle with each other. Indian martial arts likely borrowed from Persian and Central Asian traditions.
There is evidence that martial arts were practiced in ancient Greece as well. The Iliad, an epic poem written by Homer (c. 8th century BCE), describes soldiers fighting with spears, swords, and shields. Boxing was also a popular sport in Greece; one famous boxer was Theogenes of Thasos (c. 5th century BCE) who was said to have won more than 1,000 matches. It is unclear how much influence Greek martial arts had on later traditions but it is certain that the Olympic Games, which began in 776 BCE, helped spread the popularity of boxing and other sports throughout the Mediterranean region
